Junior Skills Challenge

What Is the Junior Skills Challenge?

The Junior Skills Challenge is a fun, low-pressure competition designed for young golfers of all ability levels. Instead of playing a full round, participants move through three skill stations: driving, chipping and putting. Each station focuses on one core part of the game, making it easy for beginners to take part without feeling overwhelmed. We run these events on our courses throughout the summer, and you don’t need any prior competition experience to join.

This format lets juniors practise the shots they use most often on the course, all in a supportive environment. There’s no scorecard for a whole round, no keeping pace with a group and no pressure to hit perfect shots every time. It’s about trying your best, learning a little and having fun with other young golfers.

How the Stations Work

Each station is set up on a practice area or a short section of the course. A coach or volunteer explains the challenge and keeps score. You rotate through all three stations, usually with a small group of players of similar age.

  • Driving station: You hit several tee shots toward a wide fairway zone. Points are awarded based on how far and how straight the ball lands. You can use any club you like – driver, fairway wood or hybrid – whichever you feel most comfortable with.
  • Chipping station: From a short distance off the green, you chip balls toward a target pin. Closer shots earn more points. The goal is to develop touch and control around the greens.
  • Putting station: On the practice green, you attempt a series of putts from different lengths. You earn points for holing putts and for leaving the ball close to the hole on missed attempts.

Each station offers multiple attempts, so you get plenty of chances to build your score. There’s no penalty for a poor shot – just move on to the next one.

Scoring and Format

Scoring is simple and encourages consistency. At each station you earn points for every shot: the closer to the target, the higher the points. For example, a drive that lands in the centre of the fairway scores more than one that lands on the edge. A chip that stops within a few feet of the pin scores higher than one farther away. On the putting green, holed putts get maximum points, with fewer points for putts that finish near the hole.

Your total score is the sum of points from all three stations. Age groups are kept separate, so juniors compete against others of a similar age. We don’t rank players by a single final number – instead, we celebrate improvement and effort. Everyone receives feedback and a small recognition for participating. The emphasis is on personal bests, not winning at all costs.

Why Skills Events Are Ideal for Beginners

A full round of golf can be long and challenging for a junior just starting out. Keeping concentration for nine or eighteen holes, managing the pace of play and dealing with difficult lies can turn a fun day into a frustrating one. Skills events remove most of those obstacles. You only focus on one type of shot at a time, and you can take as long as you need between attempts. There’s no rush.

Because each station lasts only 15 to 20 minutes, the total event runs under two hours. This shorter time frame matches the attention span of younger players and leaves them wanting more. Beginners also benefit from seeing the same type of shot repeated several times, which builds muscle memory and confidence far faster than playing a full round where you only hit one or two drives.

Skills challenges also remove the pressure of having to keep your own score for an entire round. Instead, you get immediate feedback on each shot and can see exactly what you need to practise next. Many juniors who start in the Junior Skills Challenge go on to play their first full rounds with much more confidence because they have already practised the key shots in a low-stakes setting.

We host the Junior Skills Challenge several times each season. Check our website or ask at the pro shop for upcoming dates. No advance registration is required – just show up with your clubs and a positive attitude.
